Welsh Liberal Democrat Senedd Candidate for Alyn & Deeside, Chris Twells, comments on the UK government's decision to lift aerospace tariffs against the United States from 1 January 2021:
Boris Johnson is selling the aerospace industry down the river by lifting tariffs against Boeing before he has secured any sort of reciprocal trade deal with the United States.
Airbus is one of Flintshire’s largest employers and it is completely irresponsible for the Conservatives to put thousands of high-quality jobs at risk simply to try to please the new American government.
"The UK Government has been accused of putting Americans and Boeing ahead of Welsh workers with their decision to drop tariffs against the US.
The EU and the US are engaged in a trade battle over subsidies for aerospace giants Airbus and Boeing, with both sides imposing selected tariffs on imports over the matter.
But the tariffs against the US will be suspended in the UK from January 1, when the post-Brexit transition period ends.
Aerospace trade group ADS criticised the “unilateral action” that was taken without securing some reciprocal measures."
